Wi-Fi® shipments will continue to see strong momentum in 2022, with more than 4.4 billion Wi-Fi devices expected to ship this year alone. There have been more than 39 billion device shipments over Wi-Fi’s lifetime, and more than 18 billion devices are currently in use to meet today’s increased connectivity demands.1
Since its debut in 2019, Wi-Fi 6 has gained market traction faster than previous Wi-Fi generations and has quickly established itself as the de facto standard for today’s Wi-Fi devices. Wi-Fi 6 is supported by a wide range of smartphones, laptops, access points, and gaming devices.
The Wi-Fi 6E market continues to develop, with approximately 200 devices and access points supporting Wi-Fi 6E. The industry has already seen service provider Wi-Fi 6E gateways, consumer and enterprise-grade access points, smartphones, laptops, televisions, chipsets, and modules. In just two years since the 6 GHz band became available in the U.S. and several other countries, forecasts predict more than 350 million Wi-Fi 6E device shipments in 2022. The availability of up to 1200 MHz of spectrum in 6 GHz will continue to pave the way for devices and services of the future. Wi-Fi 6E also delivers unique value for Wi-Fi environments with high-density needs such as stadiums, public venues, and education campuses.
Some additional Wi-Fi highlights:
- More than 2.3 billion Wi-Fi 6 product shipments expected in 2022, or more than 50 percent of Wi-Fi device shipments
- More than 15 percent of all Wi-Fi 6 device shipments will be Wi-Fi 6E in 2022; more than 27 percent of all Wi-Fi 6 device shipments will be Wi-Fi 6E by 2024
- 350 million Wi-Fi 6E devices will enter the market in 2022
