Wi-Fi Certifications Grow Rapidly

Mountain View, CA, September 30, 2003 - The Wi-Fi Alliance announced today that over 900 Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ products from 116 companies have received certification since testing began in March 2000. The organization currently performs four independent interoperability certifications including IEEE 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g and Wi-Fi Protected Access in addition to a combination of all of these technologies. We continue to see very strong demand for Wi-Fi product certifications, said Wi-Fi Alliance Managing Director, Frank Hanzlik. The increased demand for certification is a reflection of market growth and the need to maintain interoperability in the face of increasing product and standards complexity. Not surprisingly we have seen very strong demand for certification of products with Wi-Fi Protected Access security as it has become a competitive requirement for enterprise and home markets.


It is also important to point out that many products do not pass certification testing on their first try for a number of reasons, including failed interoperability and performance. If these products were not tested, technology consumers would experience these problems, resulting in product returns and additional customer support. As a result, enterprises and retailers clearly benefit from only distributing Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ products, Hanzlik added.


Products awarded the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ logo have undergone rigorous independent testing at one of four labs in Tokyo, Japan; San Jose, California; Winnersh, UK; or Taipei, Taiwan. The Wi-Fi interoperability certification program has become the international standard for providing high-quality interoperability testing for 802.11-based products.

The Wi-Fi Alliance (formerly WECA) is a nonprofit organization formed in 1999 to certify interoperability of IEEE 802.11 products and to promote them as the global, wireless LAN standard across all market segments.
